Internship: Life in Balikpapan

Hello peeps! After the fuss of moving here and there, finally Im in another city in Indonesia, exploring a new life. This is my first time being in Kalimantan which is so far away from my hometown. Life's been so far so good. The internship program we had will include 8 months in the hospital and 4 months in the primary health care. We've had our orientation in the hospital and first Im placed at the primary health care. Balikpapan is a big city, being as clean as Jogja. The foods are my main problem; Im not a picky person but Im quite surprised to find myself not suited with the cuisine here. I never had any problem regarding food before. Maybe it's about time till it suits my appetite. The weather is even hotter than Medan's, which I have considered as the hottest of all. I will try to explore the city more and find interesting places and foods. Ciao!

It's even hotter in real life, feels like 40°C

Year of fire rooster

This is probably my first time celebrating it out of my hometown. The schedule for my rotation this month was a hectic one; Im disappointed that I have no chance to go home even only for a few days. The family gathering is the thing I like the most (besides getting angpaos lol) because all of my cousins will be there and usually we celebrate it in my grandma's house which is located outside Medan. Yesterday they celebrated it in a restaurant in Medan for a new experience. My cousins from hk are coming and I cant join them for vacation :( I and my friends had the sacapmeh (CNY's Eve) dinner here in a restaurant and were so surprised to find out there were lots of Chinese here in Jogja. To be honest during my almost five years staying in this city, I only meet few of them in some occasions. It's so different compare to my hometown where Chinese is everywhere. Hopefully next year I can celebrate CNY with my family and cousins. Welcoming the year of rooster and Happy Chinese New Year!

Coass life: Another hello, another goodbye.

Finally reaching the end of my fifth department, Dermatovenereology. It's been one wonderful month in this department; I like how it's not packed with night shift yet you still can learn so much. Dermatologists only need anamnesis and skin lesion description as their diagnostic tools but there's a lot to learn. Not to mention how good looking the dermatologists are. I start to have interest in this department though I still dont know which one I will choose in the end. A few days ago, Indonesia had just celebrated the National Day and it received the best gift ever: Olympic gold medal from Badminton Mixed Doubles! The winner was my favorite XD of all time, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir. This was the second time they competed as doubles for the Olympics; the first was in 2012 but they didnt win any medal. Rio 2016 was Liliyana's third time competing for Olympic. She was a silver medallist with Nova Widianto in the same category and finally this year she can prove to everyone that she's still one of the best badminton player in the history. One of Indonesian tv channels aired the match live and I've been having nausea even few hours before the match started. I thought they would face China's doubles for the final either Zhang/Zhao or Xu/Ma. Turned out they beat Zhang/Zhao in the semifinals with straight set and Xu/Ma was defeated by the unseeded Malaysian doubles. I've had my eyes on badminton since a few years ago; in my opinion the matches are always more interesting compared to other sports. Thankyou Tontowi/Liliyana for bringing the gold medal back. Definitely the best 17th August Indonesian has ever had!

Coass life: Psychiatry? Checked!

Today marks the end of my fourth department in my clinical clerkship life. Psychiatry has always been one of the subjects Im interested in and in these four weeks I've learnt a lot about healthy mental life. WHO defined health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Sometimes people dont really care about mental problems because it's been stereotyped in the society that when you have mental problems, it means you're "crazy" whereas these problems consist of major and minor mental disorder. When a person has a mental disorder, either major or minor, family and social support are really important. After all these times learning about it, finally I can get a better understanding of what I need to do and what I should do when I face a problem that's out of my prediction. I should have a positive coping mechanism. It's normal if someone's panicked because of a problem but it's not normal if someone's panicked because of nothing. Just a random night thought though.

A year ago in this day...

Hi readers! After a long time finally Im eager to blog again. Life's been so far so good; the last two months were one of the hardest because it was two most hectic departments in the clerkship apart from being in minor departments. The good thing was I managed to maintain my weight despite eating a lot which made me happy. I also can watch drama this month since we get into a less hectic department. Throwback to a year ago in this day was the first day of my clinical clerkship in Budapest. How fast time flies. If it's possible, I want to go back to that time. It was my first experience travelling abroad alone and being so far from my hometown. Getting the best roommates I could ever ask for and best experience that I would never forget in my life. Im looking forward to do another exchange again. Wish me luck!

missing all these girls so much!

Coass life: April is here!

Finally it's April, my favorite month of the year! Perhaps because I have my birthday on April that's why I like it a lot. Week 2 has almost finished and we'll go to another hospital next week. In the department Im in now, there are students from other universities and that makes me happy because we can broaden our links, not just meeting friends from the same faculty. People say medical student has always been isolated from other faculties; sometimes it's been stereotyped as "exclusive" when in reality it's not. In my opinion, being a medical student doesnt mean you cant enjoy your life as long as you can balance between study and rest. Idk why Im being so random today~ Anyway after this term ends, Im going to enter another department which they say to be one of the hardest one. Im going to work hard play hard~^^

February 29, 2016

Once in 4 years.

It's 29 February! Im back to this city again, preparing for my clinical rotation. It's still feel surreal that Im going to do it really soon. I want more holiday! One month has never been enough for me lol I like being at home; I can talk to my family anytime I want and eat everything I like. Not to mention my wifi is much better than here's as in here I need to share the wifi's speed with other people. Nowadays I rarely watch dramas even though I always update with drama news. I had finished watching Marry Me Or Not last week and Im going to do a recap about it soon. For now I only watch reality show Youth Over Flowers in Africa because they cast Reply 1988 Ssangmundong gang (ofc this is in my must-watch list!) and kdrama Descendant of the Sun starring Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo. Song Joong Ki is one of my favorite actors; he has both looks and skills which makes me fangirling over him everytime I watch his dramas. I've watched the first two episodes and I like the plot and the characters so far. Maybe because it was completely preproduced before it was aired, the scenes aired were more detail in preparation. Im looking forward to each episode; hopefully they can keep the good pace and have a great ending of the drama.

February 22, 2016

I can do it.

Today is the fifteenth day of Chinese New Year which also marks the end of the celebration. Since the first till the fifteenth you still can visit your relatives and friends and get the red pockets. There are people who set up fireworks close to the place where I live to celebrate the last day. I've stayed here for almost a month yet I feel time passes so slowly this time. Maybe because I was too curious while waiting for my exam result to be announced. I couldnt thank God enough for giving me the result I wanted. Clinical rotation is right around the corner; I think Im not ready yet but I should do it even though Im not ready lol Fighting to myself!

Happy Chinese New Year 2567!

It was a bit gloomy this year as on CNY Eve it's raining heavily till the first day of CNY. I went to my grandma's house and because of the heavy rain, there's a big flood which caused traffic jam everywhere around the city. Usually it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour from my house to my grandma's but this time it took more than three hours for us to arrive at home. The second day was a bit better with the sun shining brightly, but today it rains again for hours. Please stop raining for the better CNY ㅠㅠ Im also curious about my OSCE result as it was said to be announced last week but then they postponed it till this week. The result determines when I will start my clinical rotation. Im excited but at the same time Im also scared of it~

Happy Chinese New Year from us!

December, my favorite!

Hello it's December, my favorite month of the year! Christmas is coming closer and after that we'll face another new year. Im not ready for 2016 yet! I still remembered back then in 2012 there's a rumor saying the doomsday will come on 21 December 2012. Im so thankful to God that we're still alive till this day. Times flies so fast that Im already in my last block of my academic year and in January I'll have my last exam before entering the clinical rotation. Im a bit aware of my laziness in studying; will I be able to survive the clerkship? After my random blabbering last time, I felt better a bit since I cant tell anyone in my real life about it. It might be because I tend to overthink, but writing about it did really comfort me. Now I have a notebook to write about life quotes and it helps a lot; you get stronger each day when you read good quotes. I find this method when I watch a youtube video. Im not the type who writes diary; I prefer to write on my blog since it's easier if I want to search for the memories.

Judge less.
Love more.
If you want inner peace, resist the temptation to gossip about others.

Starbucks' red cup = Christmas is coming!

Kick out the negativity!

It's the last day of November! The end of the year is already right around the corner and in one month we'll face another new year. These days I've been thinking a lot (since Im already in my last year). Can I pass my final practical exam and be able to do the clinical rotation in first or second batch? What will I do when I have graduated and become a doctor? Where will I be placed for the internship program? What is actually my interest in this field and where should I continue for further education? I have this kind of insecurity. People said we should just live for this moment and enjoy it. I guess this might be true for person like me who is always overthinking most of the time. I hope I can reduce the negativity out of my life and be a more positive person in the future. Fighting!!!

Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Some of my friends from other faculties were asking if I'd done with all the academic things. To answer you, I havent. I might have finished my thesis but it's not the end. I'll do explanation on how the things work in my faculty. We have two classes, regular and international. Im in batch 2012 regular where we use different academic system with our juniors. We have 2 semesters for each academic year and usually we start around August-September. In our faculty, we use block system; you cant choose which material you want to study because it's been set by the faculty. One semester contains three blocks and one block lasts for six weeks. On week 6 we always have our final exam in one day and for only 100 minutes, so we need to learn all previous weeks' materials and have it tested in merely 100 minutes. In the end of each academic year, we have clinical skills exam which is Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE). You should pass year 1 OSCE to be able to join the year 2 OSCE and so on. Today is the first day of my last block in the academic year which is Block 4.3. After we finish this block, we will face the OSCE Comprehensive which is the requirement to enter the clinical rotation. As for the thesis, here in my faculty we can choose which topic we are interested to, who will be our supervisor, and who will be our teammates so everything is up to us. If you can finish it early, you can apply for the thesis exam even though you are not finished with the official study yet. There is my friend who have done it in January when we were only in year 3. I hope this explanation helps a bit, if any of you is considering to enroll to my university.

Healthy lifestyle.

Hi! Today I'll share some diet tips I've been doing for the past few days and because of this I've lost about 1kg this week. This is only a personal opinion so if you think this is not good then dont do it. Im thinking of cutting some of my weight because my BMI is only a few more points to the overweight category for Asian people which is >22.9.

What is BMI?
Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. There are lots of BMI calculator in google but you can count it manually.

So to maintain my weight and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, I try to adapt a healthy lifestyle starting from last week. Diet doesnt mean you dont eat anything at all because if you lose too much weight suddenly, you will suffer from yoyo effect (Basal Metabolic Rate back to normal after 4 months). It's the best to lose weight gradually so it will stay for a long time.

What I eat during the day:
Morning: white bread with kaya jam, 2 bananas
Mid-morning: If I feel hungry, I eat 1-2 bananas
Lunch: Aglio olio pasta (homemade) or white bread with kaya jam or steamed chicken
Mid-day: Hungry? 1-2 bananas again
Dinner: Normally I dont eat dinner
I drink a lot of water during the day. From what I read, pasta is better than rice because of the high-fibre carbs while rice contains lots of carbs. If there's no bread, you can change it to whole-grain bread. Bananas also help in maintaining a good digestion for people who suffers from constipation. It's also important to reduce fried foods since it contains lot of fats.

Here's some explanation of fibre. (source: www.nhs.uk)
Soluble fibre
Soluble fibre can be digested by your body. It may help to reduce the amount of cholesterol in your blood. If you have constipation, gradually increasing sources of soluble fibre – such as fruit and vegetables, oats and golden linseeds – can help soften your stools and make them easier to pass.
Foods that contain soluble fibre include:
  • oats, barley and rye
  • fruit, such as bananas and apples
  • root vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes
  • golden linseeds
Insoluble fibre Insoluble fibre can't be digested. It passes through your gut without being broken down and helps other foods move through your digestive system more easily. Insoluble fibre keeps your bowels healthy and helps to prevent digestive problems. If you have diarrhoea, you should limit the amount of insoluble fibre in your diet.
Good sources of insoluble fibre include:
  • wholemeal bread
  • bran
  • cereals
  • nuts and seeds (except golden linseeds)
Eating foods high in fibre will help you feel fuller for longer. This may help if you are trying to lose weight.
If you need to increase your fibre intake, it's important that you do so gradually. A sudden increase may make you produce more wind (flatulence), leave you feeling bloated and cause stomach cramps.
It's also important to make sure you drink plenty of fluid. You should drink approximately 1.2 litres (six to eight glasses) of fluid a day, or more while exercising or when it's hot.

Hope all of these help and let's have a healthy lifestyle!

Song Triplets.

These three babies have definitely taken my heart! Song Daehan, Song Minguk, and Song Manse. If you call them together, it will be Daehan Minguk Manse 대한 민국 만세 which means "Long Live the Republic of Korea". Their father, Song Il Gook, is a Korean actor and these babies star in Superman Is Back Season 2. I've recapped the show previously when it starred Haru, Sarang, twins Seoun and Seojun, Junwoo and Junsu in the early episodes. I stopped watching it for a while but then the Song Triplets are very famous since they appear on the show and I decide to watch it again. Sarang and the twins are still on the show while Haru, Junwoo, and Junsu have left the show and being replaced by the triplets and also Jion. I always have a thing for twins; that's why I like the twins and triplets more than other although haru is my favorite. Considering Haru as the most considerate child I've ever know, Im taken aback when I see this triplets; they are way more considerate than Haru is! They are just 3 years old but they take care of each other very well. When one of them is scared of something, the other will calm him down and saying "it's not scary at all." They always go to their own chair when it's the time to eat; they climb themselves to the chair and sit properly, singing along and waiting for the food without nagging. After eating they put the dishes to the sink and even clean their tables. I dont think 3yo kids these days do those things themselves. There's also the reflection chair which I like the most from the father's way to educate the children. When one of them makes mistakes, he tell him to bring his own chair, go to their bedroom, and face the wall for 5 minutes to reflect their mistakes. You would think it's not effective for kids, but they did it and it was a success. Twins is always cute but we know it's hard to raise the twins and this is even triplets. Here I cant even choose who is my favorite; all of them are cuteness overload. The Song triplets part is very recommended and sometimes I just watch the parts where they appear in the show xD

Variety show review: Roommate Season 2

I got to watch this show because of my friend's recommendation. I didnt watch the first season so Im a bit confused at the beginning. Twelve celebrities live together in one house with sixty cameras and five bedrooms. They do housechores together, and sometimes have an outing. The members are: Lee Dong Wook, Park Min Woo, Jo Se Ho, After School's Nana, Seo Kang Jun, GOT7's Jackson, Bae Jong Ok, SNSD's Sunny, Kara's Youngji, Lee Guk Ju, Otani Ryohei, and G.O.D leader's Park Joon Hyung. The first five members are from season one while the rest are new members. In the picture above, it portrays their own roommate in the house: Ryohei-Joon Hyung, Youngji-Gukju-Nana, Dongwook-Seho-Minwoo, Sunny-JongOk, and Jackson-Kangjoon. I find it's refreshing but occasionally it's just boring. Because mostly they stay in the house doing something and sometimes they invite guests. At first it was interesting but if you have the same activities like in most of the episodes, for sure you'll get bored. I like Jackson and Youngji's interaction; they bicker a lot since they are at the same age. Both of them got lots of recognition thanks to this show because GOT7 is still new in entertainment industry and Youngji is the new member of Kara which is why no many people knew her in the beginning. Besides both of them, Lee Guk Ju, Joon Hyung, and Lee Dong Wook are also funny. Lee Dong Wook complains a lot while Lee Guk Ju is funny in her own way; you need to watch this to know why she is really famous now. Park Joon Hyung's English accent is definitely one of the main point in this show; he's 47 yo but still acts like a teenager it's cool man. You can also see an episode where the casts went to G.O.D's 15th anniversary concert. It's very touching because I know how it feels to be in a fandom, a mature fandom. I really envy G.O.D; they are not disbanded but still in a very good relationship even after 15 years. The fans are also very loyal to them although I know some of them perhaps are shipping other artists now. It made me cried a bit when I saw an episode where he invited the fans to come to their old dorm through his instagram without mentioning the address and within one hour there's like 100++ fans in front of the dorm. He even cried because he's touched so many fans still remembered and come. As for Jo Se Ho, he's annoying really Im sorry. He's a comedian, but I cant laugh every time he makes fun of something. Bae Jong Ok, Sunny, and Ryohei are just so so; they are not funny but also not annoying. I recommend this show only the parts of Jackson, Youngji, Lee Dong Wook, Lee Guk Ju, and Park Joon Hyung.

Legal!

Yes, I am. 21 years of my life has been really great; I have an awesome family and a few groups of bestfriends who understand me well. It's almost been 3 years since I left my hometown for study, but Im glad that I still keep in contact with my friends (cant mention all of them here; you know who you are). My wish for this year is that I can graduate next year, continue my medstud life as a coass, keep in contact with my friends, and some other wishes that I dont want to mention here. I hope I still can update about TVXQ and spazz dramas in the future because that's my box of happiness and I dont want to leave it. Anyway, thanks to everybody who remembered my birthday even though I didnt put it on my facebook!^^ Im always grateful that I have all of you. Happy birthday to myself! #nomoreshame #whatisshame

1st April.

It's already 1st of April. Time indeed flies so fast. It's also getting closer to my birthday. Lots of things are happening lately; Jaejoong enlisted yesterday and Junsu sang Love In The Ice in his concert. If you're not a fan of a group, you might find this ridiculous lol But honestly I still feel a bit strange till today, probably because I've keeping updates of the boys for almost 8 years and this is also the first time for us to be separated from Jaejoong. Especially he's the one updating sns the most and that simple things make us happy. He will finish his military service on 31 December 2016 so let's meet that day! Now Im also on my third year, didnt realise that in less than a year I'll be having clinical rotation. Honestly Im not ready; it feels like Im still lacking lots of things and needs to study more. But the other part of me wants to graduate faster. Still have a long way to go, I should just enjoy everything and medical + Tohoshinki always cure me the best.

March 13, 2015

Random blabbering.

I wish we had the power to stop the time. But if that's possible, then we would live in 1000000 BC and not in 21st century haha. Im having 4 days holiday after finishing my final exam last Wednesday. Having holiday is always the best, no matter how short or long it is. Currently Im not in the mood of watching Korean dramas perhaps because none of them suits my preference. The last one I watched was Healer and I really love it. I've put The Girl Who Sees Smells on my list because it starts Yoochun (you know why) even I quite dislike his costar Shin Sekyung but let's try the first few episodes until we decide everything. Tohoshinki is also having their 10 years dome tour in Japan right now; how I wish I was there. I've persuaded my mom to allow me to watch them live in Japan but because I've watched JYJ in Hongkong last year, you know it failed on my first try. Im blabbering random things today; finally after a long time I feel like writing again. And next cdrama on my list is Cruel Romance by Chen Qiao En and Huang Xiao Ming. Just hope Im in the mood of watching drama again. Annyeong!

Chandelier.

You should have known that Im a big fans of 동방신기/東方神起/TVXQ/DBSK/Tohoshinki/JYJ. This song is included in their newest Japanese album WITH and currently my most favorite one. Because last time I was having dificulty in finding the lyric and finally found it, I repost so that it'll be easier if you are searching for it. Enjoy!

Waking up from hiatus.

Yeay it's officially my holiday! Just finished my exam a few hours ago and like finally this burden has been lifted up. Im going back to my hometown tomorrow and I just realised it's been a month I didnt do any updates. Currently I only watch Pinocchio, which I like but I cant say it's an awesome piece. Other dramas on my list are Healer and Love not Forgetting. I didnt plan to watch Healer before, but after reading the recaps it attracted me that much. Tomorrow is Christmas, and Im going to do review once I finish watching dramas/films on my list. Merry christmas!
